## The research behind grit Psychologist Angela Duckworth spent years studying why some people follow through on long-term goals while others, often with more raw talent, do not. Her 2007 study "Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-Term Goals," published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews, and Kelly, 2007), measured what she called grit, a combination of sustained interest and sustained effort toward long-term goals, across West Point cadets, National Spelling Bee competitors, and Ivy League undergraduates. Across those groups, grit predicted achievement independent of IQ, and in some cases better than IQ did. The finding was not that talent does not matter. It was that talent without follow-through underperforms modest talent paired with persistence. ## Why we picked this word for a phone AI company Most conversational AI products are built to sound good in a demo, on a clean audio sample, on a scripted question. Real phone calls are not clean. Callers interrupt, background noise cuts in, people change their mind mid-sentence, and the conversation drifts off the happy path within the first thirty seconds. The easy engineering choice is to build an agent that hands the call off to a human the moment any of that happens. We did not want to build that. We wanted an agent that stays on the call and works through the difficulty, which is exactly what the word persistence describes. That is where the company name came from. ## What persistence looks like on a live call In practice, this shows up as three specific behaviors rather than one vague quality. First, the agent handles interruptions without losing its place, so a caller talking over it does not reset the conversation. Second, it does not default to "let me transfer you to someone else" as soon as a request falls outside a simple script; it works the problem for a few more turns before escalating, the same way a capable human would. Third, it holds context across the entire call, so something the caller mentioned in the first minute is still available in the tenth, instead of getting dropped after each turn. None of these are dramatic on their own.
